Doorframe Goddesses

Many cultures honor the transition from inner life to public life by decorating doorways or placing sacred objects near the door. Touching the object as we go out into the world can help to remind us of our place in the cosmic dance. The ritual of touch becomes a kinesthetic meditation, a moment in which we restore balance between spirit and the wonderful distractions of our daily activities.

My response to celebrating life's doorways has been to re-create this ancient pagan tradition in the form of "Doorframe Goddesses." These are small, touchable, handmade images of ancient Great Goddesses to hang by your door (or anywhere else) and decorate as you wish.

The actual goddess figures they represent are taken from prehistoric art. They include the Earth Goddess of Willendorf, the Bird Goddess of the Nile (ancestor to Egyptian and Greek goddesses), and the Moon Goddess of Laussel who holds a crescent menstrual calendar in the form of a bison's horn. I also offer an original goddess figure, the Winged Victory, to honor women who are survivors of breast cancer.

Each figure is handmade of durable polymer clay that has been mixed with herbs and spices. Each one is an original, signed, numbered, and mounted on a hardwood backing, 2 1/2" x 4". Also, each one has a small "pocket" in which you may place a written prayer, affirmation, flowers or feathers.
