Air, Fire, Water, Earth

The four elements--Air, Fire, Water, and Earth--were believed by ancient Europeans to contain and express the energy of all life forms. They were important symbols to all pagan religions and remain so in women's spirituality and other earth-based spiritual traditions today.

These mandalas combine goddess symbols and spirit animals that are associated with each element. In the center is a moon goddess from the Neolithic, standing within a cosmic egg, the site of infinite potential. Together they form another powerful symbol: the eye of wisdom. This places them in a long tradition that includes later Greek, Roman, and Egyptian goddesses of wisdom and knowledge.
