Kiltinan Sheela-na-Gig Figure
This "Sheela-na-Gig", the Celtic name for an "old woman possessed by a god" represents a "hag" or powerful woman displaying her life-giving vulva as the gateway into life. At least 146 of these mysterious stone statues, combining symbols of old age and birth, were placed in churches and castles in Great Britain during the Middle Ages. This Irish Sheela, the first to be described and named by art historians, was stolen from Kiltinan Church in 1990. Measures 4 inches tall. Prices: |
